This video showcases the Audiology Unit at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which provides research and patient care, playing a vital role in fulfilling the NIH Clinical Center’s mission. Audiology Unit staff from the NIH’s National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) develop and conduct research studies, work with other NIH scientists, provide hearing and balance tests and related services to patients at the Clinical Center, and train and mentor new researchers and clinicians. One clinical trial in which the NIDCD Audiology Unit has been involved is a natural history study and treatment trial for a rare, progressive, and fatal disease called Niemann-Pick type C. Two young siblings who both have this disease are profiled in this video. As part of their involvement in the NIH treatment trial, they are being monitored by and receive care from the Audiology Unit.
