DIY BBQ Grill! Homemade "Metal Can" BBQ Grill! works awesome! exactly like a store-bought grill! and it's so easy to make "it's ridiculous". couldn't be easier. the whole thing is made using only 4 things (a 6.5" SS grill grate, a sheet of SS wire mesh, a metal gallon-size paint can and some dirt, gravel or sand). that's literally all you need. (no nails, screws, rivets, brackets, tapes, glues, sealants or anything else). the only tools i used were tin snips and needle nose pliers. no power tools needed. both the grill grate and the wire mesh are made of 304 food-safe Stainless Steel. the wire mesh is actually made for use in "burn barrels" and for "barbequing on it" so it handles the heat with ease. by the way, don't use 1/4" hardware cloth (in place of the SS wire mesh). it looks similar but it's not the same. hardware cloth may not handle the heat, it's also not made to be food-safe, plus it's often galvanized and will rust when that burns off. the grill grate is 100% Solid and Smooth Stainless Steel. fits perfectly on top of the paint can. drops right in the groove and it won't slide off. i tried it with paint cans from both home depot and lowes. fits perfect on both cans. the grills capacity is: 1-2 people. it has an "even heat distribution" and cooks from edge-to-edge so it holds a lot. (2 quarter pounders and 2 hot dogs will fit with ease). and when you're done, just pop the lid on and you're good to go. since it's got the built in handle you can move it even when it's hot (and the can has no holes in it so no ash or hot coals can fall out). the grill grate is heavy duty and super smooth. almost nothing sticks to it. the unit is compact, portable and durable. i also noticed the grill is very wind tolerant. i used it in 25 to 30 mph breeze with no problems. i'm thinking i've got to bring this one to the beach. a few notes: fill the unit with gravel (or dirt or sand) two-thirds full. that works the best by far. note: don't make the grill without the mesh. the charcoal will not get the oxygen it needs to burn well. (the mesh also holds the charcoal away from the sides of the can - protecting it from damage due to overheating). the mesh allows for an "aerated" burn chamber so the charcoal can "breath". it works by pulling air down through the grill grate, along the inner sides, then through the mesh and finally to the charcoal. the unit has a steady consistent burn. cooks very efficiently. almost no heat is wasted. about the ash: to remove the ash just spoon it out (i use a tablespoon) but serving spoons and ladles work good too. (even metal measuring cups). a good, simple and fun project to consider as the summer approaches. total cost about $30.00 ($5 for the paint can (at home depot/lowes),..and $12.50 for the SS mesh and the 6.5" SS grill grate - from amazon). link to the grill grate https://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Char... link to the wire mesh https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09FPRTKJL/... *if you want to use the exact paint can - i got it at lowes.
