The oral cavity serves as the primary location for teeth housing and functions as the entry point for both food and air, facilitating vital activities such as speech and expression, while its boundaries, including the anterior lips and posterior oropharynx, along with the upper palate and lower floor of the mouth, demarcate its anatomical structure, crucial for dental understanding in both adults and children. This is a video ideal for a first-year dental student to understand basic dental terminology and anatomy. It is used to help them through dental school. It is also used for speech, facial expression and poking your tongue out at people. We can think of the boundaries of the oral cavity as anterior which is the front and that is lips, posterior which is the back and that is the oropharynx or the throat behind the mouth, superior which refers to the upper aspect and that is the high palate, inferior which is the lower aspect and that is the floor of the mouth and finally, laterally which is the side and that is the buccal mucosa. The upper teeth are housed in the maxilla and the lower teeth are housed in the mandible. In adults there are generally 16 teeth in the mandible and 16 teeth in the maxilla. In each quadrant which is equal to a quarter of the mouth there are two incisors, one canine, two premolars and three molars. On the other hand, children have 20 baby or deciduous teeth, 10 in the maxilla and 10 in the mandible. Each quadrant contains two incisors, one canine and two molars. Note that in the deciduous teeth there are no premolars.
