Recorded on Sept 11, 2017 as part of Asheville FM's "Music Matters" Lecture Series: The 1960s and ‘70s were a transformative time in African American music, and North Carolina played a pivotal role. Throughout the country, a loose network of entertainment venues, known informally as the Chitlin’ Circuit, hosted traveling musicians, many of whom would rise to national recognition and fame. Supporting those touring musicians were countless lesser known local bands, promoters and radio stations, without whom the nationally prominent acts would not have been able to function. North Carolina was home to dozens of clubs and bands that not only supported the better known acts, but in some cases, became known for their own achievements. Doug Klesch will share some of the interviews and stories he’s collected while working on "Gate City Soul", a documentary film about the ‘60s and ‘70s soul music scene centering around Greensboro, NC, as well as some of the music and history of North Carolina’s place in soul and funk music.
