In this video we create a Linux Ubuntu virtual machine on the Microsoft Azure platform. We discuss the pricing options, and the regional variances surrounding the server specifications available. We then use PuTTY to open an SSH terminal and log into the server. VMs such as these are commonly used in testing environments but are also now used in live production environments, too. The speed of spinning up a new Azure VM is amazing and much quicker than building a server in-house. Virtual machines do not need to be Linux-based though. Windows machines are also popular either either servers or, as is increasingly the case, Windows desktop PCs. A virtual Windows Desktop PC is a great way to ensure that you are able to connect to the same environment whether you're working from a laptop, a neighbour's desktop PC, a computer in cyber cafe or even just about any mobile device. Sharing workloads is also a great opportunity to share a physical computer to keep costs low, too. Virtual machines offer a world of opportunity and often come at a cost lower than it would generally be if you were to build and run your own physical PC or server, too.
