Why So Many Africans Are Learning Chinese

For most of the 20th century and into the 21st, English has been the language of global business and diplomacy. Now, many students in Africa are choosing to study Chinese. Why are many Africans choosing to learn Chinese? What role does English play in communications between China and African countries? Dr Folashadé Soulé, Senior Research Associate at the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford, explains, "Learning Chinese is considered strategic in three ways: it is for students, business, and also in government to government relations. So the facts are that African governments are increasingly pushing for the inclusion of Mandarin courses from secondary school...They are very much impressed by what they perceive to be the Chinese development model.
