(19 Dec 2000) Spanish/Nat XFA After it's spectacular eruption on Monday night, Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano continued to spew red plume from its peak on Tuesday, and authorities warn the danger isn't over. "El Popo" is refusing to give Mexicans in the area an easy ride. As the sun rose on Tuesday, smoke poured out of the crater. Many of those, who had insisted on staying put, have fled for shelter. Refuge centres have been set up in schools and other public buildings. And the army has been moving in to evacuate people from their homes. Towns have been emptied, leaving an eerie sense of foreboding. Even so, some people have refused to leave -- most for fear that their homes would be looted or their livestock stolen. This man remains here unperturbed. On Monday night President Vicente Fox warned people to remain on alert. Speaking after an emergency cabinet meeting on Monday night, the President said the emergency was not over and that some smaller incandescent particles had fallen as far as six miles from the crater. Many of the 20 million residents of greater Mexico City, just 40 miles northwest of the peak, are afraid of ash fall. Fox tried to calm those worries and said no major atmospheric effects are expected over large cities. The volcano spewed a cloud of ash 21/2 miles high, but it appeared to be blowing away from Mexico City. Scientists have warned that a dome of lava at the base of the 17,886-foot peak is causing pressure to build inside the mountain and that could trigger strong eruptions. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "If we go, who's going to give the animals water, who's going to feed them - we have to - the family have gone to the shelters and we're staying here to feed them. If the volcano were really to erupt there's a platform over there which is higher up." Authorities have decided to declare the high alert, yellow flag, phase 3, underlining that 22 towns in the states of Puebla and Morelos should be evacuated."
