The initially developed canal design software was based on excel based calculation. Later, it was built as separate professional canal design software with the name SW_Canal_2004. SW_Canal_2007 is more comprehensive than the SW_Canal_2004 version. This SW CANAL V2 is a significant upgrade to the previous version of SW_CANAL_2007. It includes multicore parallel processing, better graphics, higher computation speed, designing of multi-alignment canals, handling of background imageries, and quantity estimation. The version is self-updating such that the user gets an automated update notice. SW Canal has been used in many irrigation projects in Nepal and successfully implemented. Department of Irrigation, Nepal, and almost all divisional and sub-divisional irrigation departments of Nepal are using this software.
