The son of a strict lawyer, it was his mother who awakened his sense of humor. Twain began working as an apprentice printer in 1848, and a few years later he was already contributing articles and humorous stories to a brother's newspaper. Later, while traveling down the Mississippi aboard a steamboat, he would have been fascinated by the pilot's work, and devoted two years of his life to learning the trade. One of the many trips of his life took him, some time later, to a silver mine in Nevada, where he tried to be a miner, without much success. On the other hand, he found work on the local newspaper. It was here, from the pen of Samuel Clemens, then 27 years old, that Mark Twain was born. ➤ Roughing It is a travelogue by Mark Twain from 1872. The semi-autobiographical book details Mark Twain's travels in the American West between 1861 and 1867. ---------------------- 🎙 Read by: John Greenman ➤ CHAPTERS: 00:00 Chapter XLVII - Buck Fanshaw's Death - The Cause Thereof 17:25 Chapter XLVIII - The First Twenty-Six Graves in Nevada 30:42 Chapter XLIX - Fatal Shooting Affray - Robbery and Desperate Affray 42:36 Chapter L - Captain Ned Blakely - Bill Nookes Receives Desired Information 53:59 Chapter LI - The Weekly Occidental - A Ready Editor 01:15:01 Chapter LII - Freights to California - Silver Bricks 01:31:24 Chapter LIII - Jim Blaine and His Grandfather's Ram - Filkin's Mistake 01:42:50 Chapter LIV - Chinese in Virginia City - Washing Bills 01:56:14 Chapter LV - Tired of Virginia City - An Old Schoolmate 02:13:41 Chapter LVI - Off for San Francisco - Western and Eastern Landscapes 02:25:11 Chapter LVII - California - Novelty of Seeing a Woman 02:33:25 Chapter LVIII - Life in San Francisco - Worthless Stocks 02:48:01 Chapter LIX - Poor Again - Slinking as a Business 03:00:19 Chapter LX - An Old Friend - An Educated Miner 03:08:28 Chapter LXI - Dick Baker and His Cat - Tom Quartz's Peculiarities 03:18:38 Chapter LXII - Bound for the Sandwich Islands - The Three Captains 03:39:03 Chapter LXIII - Arrival at the Islands - Honolulu 03:47:42 Chapter LXIV - An Excursion - Captain Phillips and His Turn-Out 03:59:59 Chapter LXV - Interesting Mementoes and Relics - An Old Legend of a Frightful Leap 04:13:19 Chapter LXVI - A Saturday Afternoon - Sandwich Island Girls on a Frolic 04:25:41 Chapter LXVII - The Legislature of the Island - What Its President Has Seen 04:42:45 Chapter LXVIII - A Royal Funeral - Order of Procession 05:02:23 Chapter LXIX - "Once more upon the Waters," - A Noisy Passenger 05:12:43 Chapter LXX - A Droll Character - Mrs. Beazely and Her Son 05:27:43 Chapter LXXI - Kealakekau Bay - Death of Captain Cook 05:36:33 Chapter LXXII - Young Kanakas in New England - A Temple Built by Ghosts 05:47:17 Chapter LXXIII - Native Canoes - Surf Bathing 06:00:21 Chapter LXXIV - Visit to the Volcano - The Crater 06:11:06 Chapter LXXV - The North Lake - Fountains of Fire 06:18:55 Chapter LXXVI - A Reminiscence - Another Horse Story 06:32:13 Chapter LXXVII - A Curious Character 06:42:27 Chapter LXXVIII - Return to San Francisco - Ship Amusements 06:52:15 Chapter LXXIX - Highwaymen - A Predicament 07:02:50 Appendix A - Brief Sketch of Mormon History 07:14:21 Appendix B--The Mountain Meadows Massacre 07:23:49 Appendix C--Concerning a Frightful Assassination that was never Consummated -----------------------------------------
