Want FREE and expert Health & Term Insurance Guidance? Book a FREE call with Ditto's IRDAI-certified advisors - https://ditto.sh/ngt4or Everyone knows health insurance covers hospitalisation. But what about Ayurveda? Or Homeopathy? Can insurance really support alternative treatments in India? This is where AYUSH coverage comes in — a feature that’s now a part of most modern health insurance plans. In this video, we break down exactly how AYUSH is treated under health insurance, what’s covered, what isn’t, and how to actually claim if you choose alternative medicine. AYUSH stands for Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy. These are officially recognised systems under the Ministry of AYUSH and have now been integrated into health insurance policies thanks to updated IRDAI guidelines. Today, most comprehensive retail health insurance policies in India cover AYUSH treatments by default. But there’s a catch — you need to know the rules. For an AYUSH claim to be valid under your health insurance, the treatment must be in-patient and conducted in a hospital recognised by the government or accredited by NABH or NABL. The hospital must have at least five beds, employ qualified AYUSH doctors, and maintain detailed treatment records. Simply visiting your local homeopathy clinic or attending a casual yoga session won’t qualify. What is covered under AYUSH health insurance? Panchakarma therapies under Ayurveda, in-patient naturopathy programs, homeopathy for chronic illnesses like asthma or arthritis, Siddha and Unani treatments for long-term rehabilitation, and structured yoga therapies prescribed by certified practitioners. These are all valid if done in proper AYUSH hospitals. However, things like spa treatments, wellness retreats, over-the-counter Ayurvedic oils, or OPD consults at uncertified clinics are not covered. Some health insurance policies may also cap AYUSH claims. For example, older plans or corporate health covers might limit AYUSH coverage to ₹50,000 or just 25% of the sum insured. But many new-age retail health insurance plans now cover AYUSH up to the full sum insured — making it a truly powerful tool for long-term, holistic health management. AYUSH is especially useful for people managing chronic conditions like arthritis, psoriasis, irritable bowel syndrome, or post-surgery rehabilitation. If you’re someone who prefers natural or non-invasive treatments over allopathy — health insurance with AYUSH coverage gives you financial protection while still supporting your wellness preferences. But here’s where most people go wrong — they don’t confirm if their policy includes AYUSH benefits. They also miss checking if the hospital is accredited or if cashless claims are possible. That’s why even though AYUSH is covered by many health insurance plans, claims are often delayed or rejected due to documentation issues. So here’s what you need to remember: Always verify the AYUSH hospital’s accreditation. Collect all discharge summaries, bills, and prescriptions. Know whether your insurer allows cashless treatment for AYUSH or only reimbursement. And most importantly, don’t assume every plan covers AYUSH by default — older or entry-level plans may not.
