(7 Feb 2014) Heavy rains and flooding have killed 38 people in Bolivia according to the Bolivia Defence Ministry, local media reported on Friday. The floods have washed away people's homes and are causing illnesses, survivors said. In the city of Trinidad in the Beni department, a flood victim named Maria said the weather conditions have sickened some children. "The children have fallen ill with coughs and diarrhoea, some children have even got a fever," she said. Flood victims have set up tents along the side of the road to try to escape the rising water. "Everything was left behind in the waters, all of our belongings. So, we couldn't get it out with all this rain. It won't stop raining. It keeps raining and raining," said Teresa, who is currently living in a makeshift tent by the roadside. The intense rains started in October 2013 and have affected nearly 45,000 families in more than 100 municipalities, according to Bolivian media. The most affected departments are Beni, in the Amazon region, Cochabamba, Chuquisaca, Potosi and La Paz, the capital region. According to the Defence Ministry, nearly 44,000 acres (17.8 hectares) of crops have been affected by the rains and flooding. The government said it has deployed a plane and a navy ship with aid for flood victims.
