At ACEA’s 2023 Annual Reception, Luca de Meo, ACEA President and CEO of Renault Group, explains what is needed to ensure the EU automotive industry remains globally competitive. The EU automotive industry is an economic powerhouse for Europe and is leading the transition towards zero-emission mobility. Manufactures are unequivocal and fully committed to investing heavily in e-mobility, to securing value creation and jobs in Europe, and to helping the EU stay competitive. Luca de Meo: “We have the responsibility for 13 million people that are working in the industry. The automotive industry is having a huge impact on the trade balance and on innovation, with 30% of research and development in Europe in the budget of our industry.” In a rapidly evolving global context where the overall European competitiveness is eroding, and where competitors are protecting their own automotive industries, the key question is how Europe can react and support the shift to zero-emission road transport. “There is a temptation to develop more and more regulation. Piling up regulation doesn't mean we have a strategy. What we need is an industrial policy and strategy,” said de Meo.
