Welcome back to the workbench where we try to make things — and today we’re continuing work on Revell’s 1971 Oldsmobile 442, or what we’re calling the Faux 42. This build is loosely based on a Cutlass I was given in my early 20s — and, naturally, I tried to turn it into a 442. Not a perfect one, though. This car has lived outside, seen bad paint jobs, and taken years of southeast Texas sun damage… and that’s the look we’re chasing. In this episode, the focus shifts to the big chrome bumpers — front and rear — and figuring out how to weather chrome without rusting it or beating it up. The goal isn’t junkyard damage, but worn, sun-faded chrome that’s starting to fail in believable ways. The rear bumper becomes the test bed as I strip the factory chrome, repaint in silver, and experiment with salt masking and uneven chrome application to simulate flaking, oxidized chrome that hasn’t fully failed yet. From there, it’s all about dialing the effect back in, deciding what stays smooth, what flakes, and what gets touched back up. This is very much a “figure it out as we go” episode — experimenting, adjusting, and building a repeatable process before moving on to the more complex front bumper and grille. 🧰 In This Episode 🔩 Stripping factory chrome and repainting bumpers 🧂 Using large-grain salt for controlled chrome flaking 🖊 Applying chrome with a paint pen for uneven coverage ☀️ Simulating sun damage instead of rust or dents 🧪 Using the rear bumper as a weathering test bed 📉 Dialing effects back when they go too far 🔍 Planning chrome vs silver finishes for grilles and bezels 🧠 Deciding where wear should and shouldn’t exist 🧠 Workbench Notes Weathering chrome isn’t about destroying it — it’s about knowing where the sun hits, where it doesn’t, and stopping before it turns into something the car would never realistically have. 💬 Let Me Know What You Think This is my first time weathering chrome like this, so I’m curious what you think — too much, not enough, or heading in the right direction?
