Around 1:18 AM on July 5, 2025, Officer Staats with the Sea Bright Police Department was on patrol in the parking lot of the Sea Bright Supermarket and Liquor Store at 1160 Ocean Avenue. He observed a female walking northbound with an open container of an alcoholic beverage. After he made contact with her, she placed the can inside a trash bag nearby, but attempted to walk away from him. She initially refused to show him her identification, but she later gave him her Irish driving licence. She was identified as Sophie Keane. Officer Staats began walking towards his patrol car to run her information and write her summons, but Sophie started following him. She insisted on having her identification card and became disorderly. After multiple warnings, she was placed under arrest. As Sophie was being placed under arrest, the other male who was with Sophie attempted to intervene. After he grabbed Patrolman Panduri, he was also placed under arrest. The male was later identified as Creagh Courtney. Both Sophie and Creagh were transported in separate cars to the Sea Bright Police Department for further processing. Both individuals were processed and eventually released pending their court appearances. Sophie and Creagh were each issued summonses for the following violations: Disorderly Person (Ordinance 91-2M) and Resisting Arrest (2C:29-2) ------------------------------------------------ Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information). (P.L. 2024, c.16). Defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty. The New Jersey Supreme Court has previously affirmed in Salzano v. North Jersey Media Group, 993 A.2d 778 (2010) that “The fair-report privilege reflects the judgment that the need, in a self-governing society, for free-flowing information about matters of public interest outweighs concerns over the uncompensated injury to a person's reputation.” This video advances a compelling public interest. The summary of events was based on records that are “open to public view through open access to public records” as defined in the Salzano case. In Ramos v. Flowers, 429 N.J. Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.
