KOSOVO: KLA FIGHTERS DIGGING IN THEIR POSITIONS

(19 May 1999) Natural Sound Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) fighters have been digging in their positions in Kosovo following fighting with Serb forces. The K-L-A claims it has taken control of 2 kilometres of land from Serb- controlled areas in the past few days. It says it has destroyed several Serb artillery positions and has killed a Serb officer and three soldiers. The border area the K-L-A now controls is allegedly 17 kilometres long and 9 to 10 kilometres deep. K-L-A fighters have also been searching for any remaining Serbs in the area. The K-L-A, which has been fighting for independence, claims its recent operations near the border have been closely coordinated with other K-L-A soldiers inside the province.
