Imagine that your favourite chair has someone who waits inside. Imagine an apartment building in which a man spies on all the tenants through holes in the ceilings of each room planning a murder. Imagine a serial killer who kills his victims by suggestion alone. The stories of Edogawa Ranpo (or Rampo) have begun to be appreciated outside of Japan due to his influence on popular culture and the growing fascination in new generations about all things Japanese. But there was a time when the films being made from Ranpo's stories had a questionable reputation. Ranpo himself is widely regarded as the father of the Japanese mystery novel but whereas Edgar Allan Poe and Conan Doyle chose to deal most often with a certain type of criminal, Ranpo gives us criminals doing what they do from Ennui or, maybe, from perversion. There are numerous films based upon his work. There's even a scene in the James Bond film, 'You Only Live Twice' that uses one of his most ingenious forms of murder. This video is comprised of moments, fractions, from the films. 'Blind Beast' (盲獣, Mōjū), the story of a blind artist, whose work is comprised of bizarre sculptures of isolated body parts, who has chosen a muse who he kidnaps so she can model for him. It was made in 1969 by Yasuzō Masumura and is often cited, by those critics who know, that it is one of the best adaptation of Ranpo's novels. 'Horrors of Malformed Men' (江戸川乱歩全集-恐怖奇形人間) is based on the novel 'Tale of Panorama Island' but encapsulates moments from Ranpo's other stories such as 'The Human Chair' and 'Stroller in the Attic'. It is one of the most striking films ever made, taking us on the most convoluted of journeys through Hitchcockian wrong man to a lunatic asylum filled with naked women and an island of Dr Moreau of strange hybrid creations. Every time I see the film, I realise I had forgotten the family replacement plot where the man on the run takes the place of the husband he resembles in all ways. Because the plot goes all over the place, I often feel like I'm dreaming while watching the film. It was made by Teruo Ishii, also in 1969, and made me an ardent follower of Ishii's work seeking out whatever is available. 'Beast in the Shadows' (陰獣) is a wonderful and twisted piece of storytelling directed in 1977 by Tai Kato, best known for his numerous films for Toei. This is one of those mysteries where you can lose yourself like the writer who has been pulled into the plot. Noboru Tanaka's 'Watcher in the Attic' (江戸川乱歩猟奇館屋根裏の散歩者) from 1976 is one of many adaptations of this story. As with many Ranpo adaptations from this period, the erotic displaces all other aspects of the story. Junko Miyashita was a huge star of this type of film and remains a distinguished working actress to this day, but her ability to convey a kind of abandon to the senses with a glance carry the film into another realm. She also starred in Takana's 'Story of Abe Sada' and Kumashiro's 'Woman with Red Hair'. Perhaps more bizarre than any of these films is Umetsugu Inoue's 1962 'Black Lizard' (黒蜥蜴, Kuro-tokage). The title character is played by Machiko Kyô who was one of the best known actresses of the 50s. But what makes this adaptation so bizarre is that it is almost a musical. Henchmen seem to dance. In fact, dance numbers proliferate at the fringes of the drama. For this video, it seemed incongruous to include any of those flourishes... Maybe at a later date. There are probably several versions of this novel but only two that I have seen (both, reportedly, based on a stage adaptation by Yukio Mishima). This is slightly less well-known than the Kinji Fukasaku version but it contains a wonderful love scene between a woman and a sofa.
