A product of the tourist boom in the 1960s, Torremolinos began as a small fishing village to a large, densely-populated town dedicated entirely to sun and sand tourism. Torremolinos showcases large beaches with various related facilities and services. The famous Pimentel Tower is the town's most significant monnument and serves as an icon, with some traces of the past still visible around the areas of La Carihuela and Bajondillo districts. The origins and name of the town derive from a watchtower (torre) and the mills (molinos) built there to grind wheat, positioned perpendicularly to the ocean in order to harness the hydraulic power generated by the water flowing into it. During the second half of the 20th century, Torremolinos has changed significantly with regards to the population's lifestyle and economic activities when the progressive development of tourism that had begun which created a transformation that turned the town into one of today's best-known holiday resorts.
