This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. "Ants are everywhere and rival with humans for the greatest diversity of lifestyles. Ants invented farming and slavery way before the first humans walked the earth. They strive in deserts, conquer rainforests and are able to invade and destroy your house. But that is not all. Ant colonies are fundamentally democratic societies. Nor the queen nor a given worker presides the colony. Instead each worker decides for herself how to spend her time. But how does the individual ant know what is best for the colony? In this talk, Danielle will talk about how we tricked the ants to find out more about what each individual ant does on a day-to-day basis and what rules the ants use to organize their societies." Danielle Mersch is a biologist amazed by the beauty of life and eager to understand it. She loves challenges, diversity and interdisciplinary approaches. Luxembourgian by citizenship, born in Germany, she moved to Paris to study and experience real city life. After summers studying lizards, vultures and voles in France and Norway, she moved to Lausanne, Switzerland to work on the most intriguing and diverse creatures, ants. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
