If I were to make a list of what Panama is known for, the famous canal would come first, and the next two spots would be street gangs and drug trafficking. A local guide takes me to El Chorrillo, the most infamous neighborhood in the country, where gangs have ruled and fought with each other for thirty years and police officers are at almost every intersection. We start by visiting a former gang member for a heart-to-heart talk and to find out what unusual career he has chosen now; then we go on a neighborhood raid with the cops to see how well they can keep the streets under control; we visit a police station where American volunteers teach English to local kids and cops; and we go to the home of a member of Panama's national soccer team.
