A client reached out to us after watching one of our maple pruning videos and asked us to take a look at his maples. This particular one has never been pruned before and it caused several issues. 1. This tree is in the corner of his driveway and it created a MASSIVE blind spot when backing out. 2. There were a ton of dead branches on the inside that weighed down the tree significantly and blocked a lot of sunlight. 3. It was grown like a mushroom and this also blocks a ton of sunlight. When you grow a maple like this, you lose a lot of the interior structures. Only the outside looks nice, but the inside will be mostly dead. Some people prefer the mushroom look and that's okay. In the art of bonsai, it's about revealing the structure of the tree. In Japanese culture, this type of styling is called a Niwaki, meaning a garden tree.
