Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra - I Guess I'll Have To Dream The Rest (1941)

Broadcast date: Late 1941. Maybe October. This is the B Side of this acetate, as will be shown in the future, because a broadcast from around June is on the flipside. Back in July of 2024, I acquired 5 10" Acetates that someone in the Ohio area recorded between Summer 1941 and Spring 1942 from what I've found. Whoever this person was, they had likely just bought a console radio with a turntable & lathe. This was by no doubt recorded by an amateur, and you'll hear audible anomalies all throughout as a result (aside from crackle & hiss from the age). Recording will start and stop abruptly, sometimes with some "wow-ing" that I can't correct. Some of these discs it seems they were using to test out their new lathe by recording what was on the air, while others are more intentional by how they will have all of the space for grooving used up on each side. Some have writing saying what it is, while others have nothing but the contents recorded to explain themselves. Some of these have had a significant amount of damage from improper play, or just from abuse over the years. In some cases so severe that it's been intimidating to approach. But now with a solid year of digitization experience under my belt, I'm finally getting around to this. All songs will have these paragraphs of analyses under them upon release. Dorsey fans may enjoy this interesting piece here. It's a song a lot of you know, it's a moderate hit record with both Frank Sinatra, and the Pied Pipers in tow for the vocals. Nothing different from the standard Victor recording done in late June of 1941, except how our unknown Lathe operator starts recording a few seconds in. What IS different though is how at the end, applause is in the background, before the lathe is turned off abruptly. This applause was either dubbed in real time as a sound-effect to sound authentic how a "fake broadcast" would, or it's a live audience reacting, as perhaps it's from a DJ show such as Make Believe Ballroom or something. "Faked Broadcasts" were notorious in the early days of radio, most of which happening in the 30s, but not unheard of in the 40s. If a independent station had an act miss a broadcast date, or perhaps wanted to draw listeners in from the networks by claiming to have one of the top bands, they would print that band in their timetables, have a DJ at the mic, along with a handful of records on the turntable by one band (in this case Tommy Dorsey's). They'd announce like the band is performing, have some dubbed audience applause on another turntable ready to go, and then play the songs. It was a sure-fire way to fill up as much airtime as needed, and it was very hard to prove as fake. Musicians and recording engineers might know, but it wasn't worth going to court over. Most times. And if it wasn't a faked broadcast, then again it was likely a DJ show, showcasing the "top [X] best selling records for the week/month of [X]". There isn't any other likely explanations for what we are hearing, and there's plenty to support both theories. The record didn't release to the public until around mid August. The review seen in video is from my local paper at the time, ("On The Records" column by Coburn Gum. The St. Petersburg Times 8/17/1941; pg 56), and it appears the whole of the US didn't have access to it until at least mid September, for copies reaching the West Coast. This also gives us a good time frame for when this airing took place. Sometime between August & late October.
