During the escape to Australia following the fall of Java, USS Edsall (DD-219) was responding to a distress signal from USS Pecos (AO-6) on March 1, 1942, when she was spotted southeast of Christmas Island by the Kidō Butai, the Imperial Japanese Navy’s carrier strike force. At 1550, Edsall was reported as a “Marblehead type” by one of Akagi’s combat air patrol A6M2 “Zero” fighters, referring to the light cruiser USS Marblehead (CL-12) of the Omaha-class. The heavy cruisers Chikuma and Tone and the battleships Hiei and Kirishima were detached to deal with this supposed light cruiser. At 1603, Chikuma commenced firing at a range of 21,000 yards, later followed by Hiei at 1619 firing at 27,900 yards. Despite Edsall’s reduced mobility as a result of a prematurely detonating depth charge on January 23, her commanding officer, Lieutenant Joshua J. Nix, ordered a smokescreen and began making radical turns, maneuvering after spotting muzzle flashes, and varying speed from flank to full stop. When the Japanese ships began to close the distance, Edsall turned to face them, launching torpedoes at Chikuma and firing her 4-inch guns. At this point, all four Japanese ships were firing at Edsall, and Hiei had even launched her floatplanes for gunfire spotting, but by 1655 they ceased fire with only one possible hit. The 26 D3A1 “Val” dive bombers launched from Kaga, Hiryū, and Sōryū were now beginning to arrive with 250 kg bombs, scoring several hits and near misses which set Edsall afire and reduced her speed. Taking advantage of this, the Japanese ships closed the distance once again and resumed firing at 1718. Finally, after the firing of 62 5-inch, 844 8-inch, 132 6-inch, and 297 14-inch shells, Edsall went down by the stern at 1731. Almost all of the approximately 216 Edsall crewmen and U.S. Army Air Force personnel aboard were lost with the ship. However, 8 survivors were captured and the decapitated remains of 6 Edsall crewmen and 5 unknowns, possibly Army Air Force personnel, were recovered near Kendari II airfield after the war.
