Have I got a story for you! Join me on this solo backpacking adventure on the Wildcat Hollow trail where I find a dog! Wildcat Hollow is located in the Athens unit of the Wayne National Forest in Ohio. We had rain, wind, blowdowns and all manner of complications on this trip. Tune in to see some of the variables that can be thrown at you during a backpacking trip! Join me on another solo backpacking adventure! On this trip I explored the popular backpacking trail called Wildcat Hollow in the beautiful state of Ohio. Wildcat hollow is located in the Athens district of the Wayne National Forest. The trail is very popular among Ohio backpackers so I had to see what all the hype was about! I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I will briefly summarize the trip. The general state of the trail was very poor for my trip. I encountered over 100 blown down trees on a 16 mile trail, which is very excessive in my opinion. It's by far the most trees I've ever seen down on a trail in my life. Unfortunately it wasn't the best day for recording as it was very dark and gloomy most of the day. I dealt with light rain on and off the entire first day. It rained about 80% of the night as well. Luckily I have high quality gear and managed to stay dry the entire trip! My rain gear that I took was the USMC goretex top and bottom. While goretex has some downsides, such as being heavy, overall it is high quality rain gear that will keep you dry in the elements! It also will break the wind as well! My sleeping system and shelter is from Warbonnet. The tarp I used is their Mountainfly model, which is a good compromise between weight and protection from the elements. I highly recommend check out their gear if you are a hammock camper! The second day was a little bit better as we finally saw some sunshine poking through the clouds. I got to see a huge pond with a ton of beaver activity in the area. As with most Ohio backpacking trails, there was plenty of oil equipment present in the vicinity. Overall, this wasn't my favorite trip I've ever had, but I'd definitely be willing to try it again in the future.
