2021 Extreme Mustang Makeover-Lyra's 100 Day Journey

This journey was a rollercoaster- so many moments of joy, so many of grief. Despite what this video shows, Lyra was not an easy horse to train by any means. Comparing to what I saw and heard other youth say about what the training was like for their horses, Lyra was probably one of the most challenging in the group. She was aggressive, protective, and very flighty when I first got her. After she was gentled, she was as sweet as pie, but very opinionated and stubborn- you couldn't make her do something if she didn't want to. This was extremely frustrating, and at times I would just cry after working with her because seemingly simple things like trotting in hand or stepping up onto a bridge would become a full on fight between us. But, she taught me something. And that is that I needed to start listening to what horses are telling me, really telling me. She demanded fair treatment, and would let you know if you were not being accommodating to her needs. She doesn't let you pull any crap, making it so that I could never be harsh or aggressive with her, otherwise she would shut down and pull inward. I am so grateful for that gift that she gave me, especially because yearlings can be very easy to push around. She has taught me more than any horse has, and I'm so damn lucky to call her mine. She is my soul horse, inside and out. Thank you for watching.
