Bharat Nepal relations 2025: historical analysis by indian ambassador Devi prasad Bharat-Nepal relations are multifaceted and deeply rooted in history, culture, geography, and economic interdependence. Here's a detailed overview: Historical and Cultural Ties: Ancient Connections: The relationship is centuries old, with shared cultural and religious heritage. Janakpur in Nepal is considered the birthplace of Sita, Lord Rama's wife in the Hindu epic Ramayana, forging strong religious and social bonds. Lumbini, also in Nepal, is the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, revered by both Hindus and Buddhists in both countries. Open Border and People-to-People Connections: India and Nepal share a long, open border, allowing for the free movement of people. This has fostered close familial ties, with many Nepalese citizens residing and working in India and vice versa, often referred to as "Roti-Beti ka Rishta" (ties of food and marriage). Treaty of Peace and Friendship (1950): This treaty forms the bedrock of the special relationship, ensuring reciprocal treatment of citizens in each other's territories regarding residence, property, business, and movement. It also includes clauses on security cooperation. Political Relations: Early Cooperation: In the 1950s, Nepal looked to India for support against potential communist influence and welcomed close ties. Periodic Strains: Over time, Nepal has expressed concerns about India's influence, leading to occasional diplomatic tensions. Nepal's proposal in the 1970s to declare itself a "Zone of Peace" was not accepted by India, which suggested the entire South Asian region should be a zone of peace. High-Level Visits and Mechanisms: Frequent high-level visits and various bilateral mechanisms, including the Joint Commission, have been established to foster dialogue and cooperation. Security Cooperation: Both armies share a strong and harmonious relationship based on mutual trust and respect. Approximately 32,000 Gorkha soldiers from Nepal serve in the Indian Army, and the chiefs of both armies are conferred with honorary ranks in each other's armies. Economic Relations: Trade Partner: India is Nepal's largest trading partner. The trade treaty between the two countries, revised in 2009, provides Nepal with greater access to the Indian market. However, Nepal faces a significant trade deficit with India. Indian Investment: Indian firms are among the largest investors in Nepal, contributing significantly to Nepal's Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Development Assistance: India has been a significant development partner for Nepal, focusing on infrastructure, health, education, water resources, and connectivity projects. Connectivity: The Treaty of Transit facilitates transit rights for Nepal through Indian territory for third-country trade. Rail service agreements also govern freight transport. Hydropower Cooperation: Cooperation in water resources and hydropower is a key aspect, with India providing power to Nepal and joint development projects being explored.
