RARE! Orca (Killer Whale) Feeding Behaviour in Orkney, Scotland | November 2025

On our latest trip to Orkney, Scotland we had an incredible encounter with the 27s pod (orca/killer whales). The pod was demonstrating a behaviour that we have never seen in UK waters while hunting and feeding on a seal they had just successfully caught. This footage may look like it's in rewind - but it's not! Similar behaviour, often termed "moonwalking", has been mainly observed in populations of transient or Bigg's Killer Whales off the coast off Canada. It is thought to be a method of sharing prey where the pod can tear apart the catch and share amongst each other. However it is also thought to be a social behaviour too. To be able to observe behaviour such as this in Scottish waters is extremely rare and it is thought to not be often seen anywhere else apart from in the orca population off Canada! We felt extremely privelaged to witness this behaviour up close, in a pod we are very familiar with and have followed all over mainland Scotland, Orkney and Shetland.
