Your medication Levetiracetam Levetiracetam is also known by the brand names: Keppra and Keppra XR. Levetiracetam comes in 250, 500, 750, and 1000 mg tablets, 500, and 750 mg extended release tablets, 250, 500, 750, and 1000 mg dissolvable tablets, and 100 mg/mL oral liquid. Levetiracetam is most commonly used to treat seizures. No matter what your doctor has you taking it for, levetiracetam is usually taken by mouth with or without food most commonly once or twice a day. If upset stomach occurs take levetiracetam with food. If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. For best results taking levetiracetam, take each dose at the same time each day. Short-acting tablets may be broken in half but do not chew or crush. Extended-release tablets must be swallowed whole, do not split or break tablets. Use dry hands to take the dissolvable tablet out of the foil and place on top of your tongue. Allow tablet to melt, take a sip of liquid, then swallow. Some common side effects with levetiracetam include increase in blood pressure, aggression, agitation, anger, anxiety, depersonalization, irritability, tiredness, vomiting, headache and weakness. Some less common side effects include upset stomach, decreased appetite, constipation, nasal congestion, and cough. While taking levetiracetam, remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have: • Signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, tightness of the chest, etc.) • An allergy to levetiracetam. • To stop taking leveltiracetam because this medication should not be abruptly discontinued because of the possibility of increasing seizure frequency; therapy should be withdrawn gradually unless safety concerns require a more rapid withdrawal. Abrupt discontinuation with levetiracetam has been associated with anxiety, diarrhea, headache, excessive sweating, sleeplessness, and nausea. All forms of levetiracetam including the liquid needs to be stored at room temperature in a dry place protected from light. Use the measuring device received from the pharmacist or doctor for the oral solution. Keep all medications in a safe place out of reach of children and pets.
