The Moon House Ruins in Bears Ears National Monument is one of the most well-preserved and fascinating Ancestral Puebloan sites in Utah. Nestled within McLoyd Canyon, this remote and intricate cliff dwelling dates back to around 1200 AD and is named for the distinctive lunar patterns painted on its interior walls. Unlike many other ancient dwellings, Moon House features multiple rooms and defensive structures, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of the Ancestral Puebloans who once thrived in the region. The trailhead is off of Snow Flat Road. Some of this road is maintained and graded, but other areas with rock are much rougher. Moon House Ruins itself is accessible via a rugged, unmarked trail, visiting this site requires careful planning and a special permit, but those who make the journey are rewarded with an awe-inspiring look at history surrounded by the stunning red rock landscapes of Bears Ears.
