Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced in Anbar Governorate in 2014 following fighting in December 2013 between Government forces and armed opposition groups. In June, the situation deteriorated when armed opposition groups took control of Mosul, forcing some 650,000 people from their homes. A second wave of attacks and clashes in August led to further mass displacement, and by the end of the year over 2 million people were displaced. OCHA responded immediately. It sent humanitarian experts to the country to assess and prioritize humanitarian needs, and it opened a country office. OCHA also managed the allocation of US$500 million provided by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, enabling aid groups to rapidly scale up efforts to reach over 1.5 million people with food, water, shelter, health care and supplies.
