Who else out there is a giant Nutcracker Nerd? Well, if you are, this video is for you, and if you're not you can either skip this video or buckle up! As a huge fan of the Nutcracker Ballet myself, I have seen quite a few versions, and here's the thing: they're always different. The average viewer of the Ballet may think they are seeing the "real" version of the show, when in fact each company makes their own changes. Some of those changes are VERY interesting (read: odd) choices indeed! Here I dissect some of the more peculiar versions I've seen, and which version of this ballet is "correct". Please put in the comments any Nutcrackers you've seen which really stuck with you, for good or bad, and how you personally feel it should go. Personal comments left off the video: Best Sugar Plum Cavalier I've Ever Seen: this was with a company in Florida performed outside in a park in Orlando. This was a young black man, which I mention only because even today people of color are sadly underrepresented in ballet. Best Drosselmeyer: Michael Anderson with Von Heidecke. A younger man who first showed up in the role of Herr Stahlbaum, and took over the other part the next year. He plays a courtly older gentleman with a finely turned leg. Best Sugar Plum Fairy: Teanna Zarro with Von Heidecke. Sadly, she no longer performs the role, but she was able to infuse it not only with technical mastery, but also with much-needed warmth. As an added bonus, she and her Cavalier (Forgot his name, unfortunately) performed the roles for several years running, and every time they began dancing together, they would look at each other with a kind of recognition of the personal tradition they were enacting. It was a treat to, in a way, be a part of that. More Notes: Sean Savoye apparently was a company member for about 15 years until he retired. Music selections are all originally from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, and include: Waltz of the Flowers, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (selections free to use through YouTube); also the Arabian Divertissment and Grandfather Dance, both performed by Trygve Larssen (free to use through Pixabay). #nutcrackerballet #nutcrackerperformance #tchaikovsky #tchaikovskynutcracker #newyourcityballet #nycballet #balanchine #balanchinenutcracker #mariatallchief #traditionalballet #balletonstage #balletmovies #balletmusic #classicalmusic #pyotrtchaikovsky #childrensballet #baryshnikov #gelseykirkland #christmastraditions #christmasshows #christmasballet #famousballet #popularballet
