The history of the Shih Tzus goes back a long way, since the dogs are said to have existed in the monasteries of Tibet as early as the 7th century. According to legend, Buddha is said to have possessed a dog that could transform into a lion. For this reason the monks bred small dogs that were supposed to resemble a lion and called them "Shih Tzu", which means lion. Moreover, thanks to their good hearing they were also suitable as guard dogs for the temples. In the course of the 17th century these dogs arrived in the empire of China, where they developed into palace dogs. With the communist takeover in the 20th century the enthusiasm for the elegant dogs came to an abrupt end. So the breeding in China came the final end. Fortunately, European and American breeders were found who took over the breeding. In 1934 the dogs were recognized as a separate breed and today they are classified in the FCI group 9: Society and companion dogs in section 5: Tibetan dog breeds. The Chinese also use the term Lion Dog for the Pekingese and the Lhasa Apso. The Shih Tzu is a clever and open-minded dog, which is friendly towards its humans. He is often in a good mood and knows how to please his master and mistress. The somewhat arrogant dog has a proud appearance and loves to be the center of attention. Very charming he demands his cuddles and quickly becomes everybody's darling. Thanks to his open and affectionate nature he is a great family dog who gets along well with children. Towards strangers he is reserved at first, but he quickly thaws and likes to be cuddled. For the cheerful and loyal dog the closeness to his human is very important and he likes to be everywhere. The clever dogs come up with one or the other trick or two that will surprise even their masters and mistresses. His hunting instinct is weak, so walks without a leash are no problem with him.
