How can we manage agitation and anxiety, conflict or misfortune? Problems can feel very large. What can help is to find some peace and perspective to shrink the problem in our mind first. Christine Lambie presents a Sanskrit mantra to invoke peace. It won't immediately solve all your problems. But it might give enough calm to get approach a situation freshly. It's intended to bring peace to the individual as well as to the immediate environment. It's a mantra of universal blessing. It invokes shantih, peace, calm, tranquility, calmness of mind. The root of shantih indicates being tired of involvements, giving up attachments. It also indicates being quiet, calm, satisfied, contented. It begins with Om. Then it goes on to all the places we can find shāntih, peace: dyauh shāntih – peace in heaven, sky. Antariksham shāntih – peace in the space between heaven and earth. Prithivī shāntih – peace on earth. Āpah shāntih – peace on the waters. Oshadayah shāntih – peace in plants, literally herbs. Vanaspatayah shāntih – peace in trees, forests, woods. Vishvedevāh shāntih – peace in all powers. Brahma shāntih – peace in spirit, Brahman is a word for the one universal soul or consciousness, one divine essence and source. Sarvam shāntih – peace in everything. Shāntir eva shāntih – peace only peace.
