LAAOS III trial results: Richard Whitlock on the results of Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion 3 study
Left atrial appendage occlusion during cardiac surgery prevents ischemic stroke and systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation by 33%, with anticoagulation, and 42% after the first 30 days post surgery. The PHRI randomized controlled multinational trial was conducted over 9 years, with co-PIs Richard Whitlock and Stuart Connolly, both of PHRI, McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences. LAAOSIII findings were presented at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) 2021 virtual conference, and simultenously published in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).
