How to treat blackheads

How to treat blackheads? This is the most common question dermatologists get asked. Blackheads are thought to be due to oxidised sebum and keratin, found in acne comedome. If this has no opening the skin’s surface it is called a whitehead. Blackheads are commonly found on the nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead. In extensive blackhead acne, they may also occur on the chest, back, arms and even legs, and in unusual places such as the ears. Blackheads clog up the oil gland – acne comedome and may lead to infection, forming acne cysts, leading to pus and zits. This is called papular pustular cystic acne. If left untreated it may lead to acne scars. Blackheads can be popped, squeezed or extracted. Dr Sandra Lee AKA Dr Pimple Popper has done many videos on acne, cyst and blackhead extractions, and shows the correct technique. I have a few videos on my method of blackhead extraction, using comedone extractors that can be cheaply purchased online. Blackheads can also be removed with peels, and creams as well as techniques such as microdermabrasion skin needling and microneedling. I like the VITA peel or vitamin A peel because it is quick to perform and painless, but most of all extremely effective- up to 80% of blackheads can be removed in just one minute – though it does take 2-3 days before the blackheads are pushed out. This vitamin A cream is compounded in a make up base, and has a concentration of 1-2%, or 100-200 times the strength of over the counter creams. Other chemical peels I use include lactic acid, AHA or glycolic acid as well as BHA peels. Whiteheads are harder to treat- they require a few sessions for best results, and in some cases may require laser to extract. For more on laser and aesthetic procedure, please SUBSCRIBE.
