Sony's revolutionary portable cassette player, the Sony Walkman is now 10 years old. People sporting headphones in public - something that once seemed so remarkable - is now commonplace. The Late Show considers what other impact the personal stereo has had on society in the space of its first decade. Stephen Bailey - author of Sony Design - reflects on the genesis of the Walkman, Geoff Muge - Sony UK's Product Manager - charts the evolution of the Walkman, composer David Cunningham explains how music production techniques have adapted to take advantage of the boom in personal stereo players, branding expert Raymond Perrier looks at the strengths and weaknesses of the Walkman brand, and author Ben Woolley tests out the new video Walkman. Meanwhile, cartoonist Michael Heath, artist Peter Lee-Jones, author Judith Williamson and radio producer Michael Mason consider the wider societal aspects of Walkman useage - does the success of the Walkman represent the ultimate triumph of individualism over collectivism? Sarah Dunant introduces. Clip taken from The Late Show, originally broadcast on BBC Two, 21 November, 1989.
