The New York Transit Museum is housed in a disused Subway station in Brooklyn called Court Street. The station was built by the city owned IND Subway before unification of the 3 systems. The station was a dead end for local trains and was short-lived, being active for only 10 years. The museum began occupying the station from 1976, after being abandoned for 30 years. It contains a collection of former rolling stock on the station platform - though this is not the entire heritage fleet of the New York City Subway - as well as old signs, ticket barriers, posters and other artefacts from the subway. It also contains collections from the street transport divisions (bus & formerly streetcar). Entrance to the station is about a 10 minute walk from the active Hoyt Schermerhorn Station (A C & G Trains).
