Cardinal Lawrence, played by Ralph Fiennes, delivers a homily to the College of Cardinals at the inauguration of the Conclave to elect a new Pope. Certainty, when misplaced, can become a sin. It can lead to pride, rigidity, and the exclusion of others who see differently. We might be tempted to say, “I know everything about God,” or “I am sure my way is the only way.” But when we cling to such certainty, we risk closing our hearts to the living God, who always reveals Himself in surprising ways. Doubt, on the other hand, is not the enemy of faith. Doubt, approached with humility and openness, can be a gift that deepens our relationship with God. Just as Thomas doubted until he touched the wounds of Christ, our questioning can lead us to encounter the risen Lord in a more profound way. St. Paul calls us to unity in faith and love, saying, “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling” (Ephesians 4:4). This unity does not demand uniformity or absolute certainty but rather a shared trust in the mystery of Christ’s love. So let us embrace doubt not as a sign of weakness, but as a reminder of our need for God’s grace. Let it keep us humble, open, and willing to grow. And may our uncertainty lead us not to despair but to deeper prayer, greater compassion, and an unshakable trust in the One who knows all mysteries.
