Here’s the reality of running an on-farm shop you get to do it, but you also have to do it. I started as a Grade A certified micro goat dairy, but when I stepped away from the regulations and red tape, I had to build a new way to keep going. The on-farm shop wasn’t just a fun idea it became a must have. And let me tell you, it’s real work. I’m the milker, the maker, the shopkeeper and yes, the cleaner too. Volunteers help, but the day-to-day still falls on these hands. People sometimes struggle to understand the difference between a large corporate grocery store and a small farm shop like mine. The shelves aren’t always perfect, and the hours aren’t long but the food is real, and so is the connection. There’s tremendous freedom in it. Security, too — knowing where your food comes from. But there’s also that quiet question in the back of my mind: Will it be enough? Most days, the answer is simple it’s enough for today. This is what real small farm life looks like.
