Sleep safely Eagle family Here is the latest post regarding from the SWFL Eagle Cam Team regarding egg #2: "Dec 24, 6:40 PM dadsjazz (Admin): Merry Christmas Eve everyone! Here is the official Update on Egg #2 and some information to follow about what may possibly cause an egg to not hatch: Egg #2 is currently at 39 days of incubation. The normal incubation range is 34–40 days, and an egg is generally considered nonviable after day 40 if no hatch occurs. At this time, there is no visible pip. We continue to watch and wait—but as each hour passes know the likelihood of a successful hatch decreases. A soft reminder that nature writes her own story—as E26 thrives and grows right on pace. Thank you for being respectful of differing hopes as viewers continue to watch and wait. Dec 24, 6:41 PM dadsjazz (Admin): What will happen if an egg doesn't hatch? Unhatched eggs have been found in nests once young have fledged, but are usually broken by traffic in the nest. Nonviable eggs sometimes remain in a nest through the entire season. Depending on the eagles, nonviable eggs may be removed or pushed from the nest; pushed to the side of the nest and covered or even eaten to recapture the energy and calcium they contain. If an egg doesn't hatch it is generally ignored once hatchlings become active. Dec 24, 6:42 PM dadsjazz (Admin): Does the adult eagle know an EGG is NONVIABLE? No, the eagle doesn’t know when an egg is nonviable. They'll continue to incubate until they eventually give up. Dec 24, 6:42 PM dadsjazz (Admin): Why aren’t some eggs viable? Some eggs aren't viable simply because biological systems aren't always perfect. The egg may never have been fertilized, the embryo can suffer a fatal developmental defect at any time, extreme weather can occur, or environmental contamination, etc. Dec 24, 6:43 PM dadsjazz (Admin): Thank you for your support and have a Happy Holiday Season!"
