Before the world knew the SAS or American special forces, Germany’s Fallschirmjäger had already set the standard for elite warfare in World War II. In this documentary, we explore the creation and deployment of Europe’s first modern airborne force one trained not for trench lines, but for lightning-fast operations, deep behind enemy lines. Their first mission at Eben Emael in 1940 stunned the world: a silent glider assault against one of the strongest fortresses in Europe, executed with precision and daring. It was the first mission of its kind in military history and marked the arrival of a new type of soldier the airborne elite. The Fallschirmjäger would go on to take part in the airborne invasion of Crete, the largest operation of its kind, but their success came at a high cost. By 1942, these once-celebrated German paratroopers were no longer being used in airborne roles, but instead thrown piecemeal into the meat grinder of the Eastern Front. From the brutal forests of Volkhov to the frozen banks of the River Neva, they were sent to hold collapsing lines, fill gaps in overstretched divisions, and take on suicidal counterattacks against the Red Army. Their transition from elite airborne troops to frontline infantry in Russia represents one of the starkest transformations of any unit in World War II.
