[Anchor] An employee in their 20s at the popular franchise London Bagel Museum has reportedly died from overwork. The bereaved family claims that the employee had been working more than 80 hours a week before his death. Reporter Kim Chae-rin has the story. [Report] The popular franchise “London Bagel Museum,” known for sparking a bagel craze and its long waiting lines, opened a new branch in Incheon this past July. Just four days after the opening, it was belatedly revealed that a 26-year-old employee, Jung Hyo-won, who had been with the company for just over a year, was found dead. He was discovered in cardiac arrest at the company dormitory, and his family insists that the cause was death from overwork. Based on messenger conversations and transit card records, the family claims that Jung worked over 80 hours during the week leading up to his death while helping prepare for the new store opening. Messages sent to friends show that Jung went to work around 9 a.m. the day before his death and did not leave until around midnight, saying he hadn’t even eaten dinner by 7 p.m. because of work. The family also claims that for the three months prior, Jung had been working an average of more than 60 hours per week. They filed an industrial accident compensation claim with the Korea Workers’ Compensation and Welfare Service on Oct. 22, seeking official recognition of his death as work-related. [Father of the late Jung Hyo-won: “He used to be cheerful, like a daughter to me… but after joining the company, he changed. He stopped talking much, and even on his days off, he just slept all day.”] In response, the London Bagel Museum stated that according to their internal review, Jung’s average weekly working hours were 44, which “clearly contradicts” the family’s claims. The Ministry of Employment and Labor is currently reviewing whether to launch a labor inspection in connection with Jung’s death.
