My other 2 bikes are non-motor bikes. Past year, I've been mostly testing the ebike with 4 pannier setup. TESTING the e-bike more: ▪︎Range per battery at Assist-3 (25 miles with gear) ▪︎Weight on the rear wheel with 2 spare batteries. Weight on the E-bike: I used scales to weigh the bike, gear, food/water, and me. Sitting on the bike, my weight is distributed 60% rear & 40% front. Mar 2025. Apr 22 2025 With gear: Without gear: WithGearEtc Front: 55 lbs. 31 lbs. 73 lbs Rear: 68 lbs. 35 lbs. 77 lbs ------------------- ----------- ----------- 123 lbs. 66 lbs. 150 lbs [with ebike spare batteries, bike, me, gear, food, water] After fully loading Tues Apr22 Front: 73 + 60% rider = 254 lbs on rear wheel Rear: 77 + 40% rider = 188 lbs on front wheel I've concluded it's too much weight for those wheels. Will tailor out some items. But mostly the extra 15-20 lbs for 2 spares and chargers. BOB trailer will have to be used until I lose 50-75 lbs...while lowering speed and avoiding holes. ▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎ Bike with all gear/food/water weighed: ▪︎Rear wheel: 77 lbs Rear loaded bike setting on scale. With my 60% body weight, 254 lbs loaded on rear wheel. ▪︎Front Wheel: 73 lbs Front loaded bike setting on scale..With my 40% body weight, 188 lbs loaded on front wheel. ▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎ Broke 3 spokes in February 2025 for the 1st time. No issues for a year and 500 miles until hit a couple holes on the C&O towpath going at 13-15 mph. Too fast for the terrain. Top heavy on rear rack. 2 spare batteries alone weigh 15 pounds. Hit a couple holes on the towpath (Paw Paw to Little Orleans) at 13-15 mph. Hard hit. Didnt realize it until 20 miles later. Never broke any spokes on any bike before. Ordered and got spokes changed by Mt Airy bikeshop. Said I'd break others that were stressed. Other spokes were by then compromised. Couldn't find a wheelbuilder to just rebuild the wheel. Mt Airy too busy being Spring. Most concensus of other cyclists on line was replace spokes as they need it. So I set myself up to make roadside repairs as it happens. But will remove weight. See if wheel supports using the BOB trailer pulling weight rather than downward weight on the rear wheel. At least until I lose 75 lbs myself. Yeah, I'm overweight..Arthritis...less activity. But gotta lose it. Meantime, switch to the BOB trailer. On this 4 day trip, I broke 2 spokes after 50 miles once surface changed to rougher gravel (mp 22). At mp 16.6 next morning I changed the spokes. Tried on the towpath but spoke was too tight. 1st time changing spoke myself...but got it changed. But I missed rechecking tension after reloaded gear. I broke 2 more spokes near mp 26. Changed them taking time to retension each spoke. Went 70+ miles still no more broken spokes. I've concluded this rear wheel can't hold me plus the spare e-batteries plus gear/food/water reliably. 250 lbs on the wheel. Dont know what the wheel is really rated for. The rear Enviolo hub is rated for 550 lbs force. I'll use my BOB trailer to haul extra 2 spare batteries. It's just the "straw that breaks the camel's back". Too much weight on rear wheel with me. Once I lose my body weight, won't be an issue. Just carrying 1 main 500 watt battery just isn't practical to bike tour for me. I reasonably need 1500 watts. For this bike, that's 3 500 watt batteries. My range (loaded with gear etc) is: (on flat terrain) Assist-1 ~45-50 miles (but really watching it) Assist-2 ~35 miles Assist-3 ~25 miles I carry 2 chargers and 15 amp extension cord with 15 amp rated 3way plug. I can dual charge 2 batteries at once. Takes just under 3 hours if fully depleted. Each charger uses 2 amps.
