In July 2009, a filmmaker, a journalist and a photographer embarked on an expedition funded by Roca’s We Are Water foundation to document the desiccation of the Aral Sea through film, word and photographic image: The filmmaker Isabel Coixet filmed Aral. The Lost Sea*, a beautiful documentary narrated by Ben Kingsley, the journalist and writer Ignacio Vidal Folch wrote an evocative story of what we experienced there and I had the privilege of making the extensive photographic project shown here. Some of my pictures as well as a video art film, were exhibited in Lisbon, London, Madrid and Barcelona Roca Galleries, and I designed this book to condense my experience after portraying the remains of a sea. As the book couldn't be edited physically I did this audiovisual assembly with the suggestive music of Jordi Rovira**, my ex-partner in Andrei Estudi, that I share with you all in the maximum quality to let you appreciate every dot and scratch of that post-apocalyptic landscape. (I recommend you to play the video in 4K) I portrayed the landscape with the last professional digital camera at that time in RAW, the people who still were living there with a vintage medium format camera Rolleiflex 2.8F Planar with the best true-to-life colour positive film and the making of pictures with a vintage medium format foldable camera Super Ikonta, kindly borrowed by Mr Casanova from Casanova Foto, in black and white. I chose digital for the consequences of the human actions and analog to capture the human being organic nature. The Aral Sea was the fourth largest lake in the world with an area of 68,000 km2 and used to feed thousands of people giving them prosperity. The sea began shrinking in the 1960s after the rivers that fed it were diverted by Soviet irrigation projects in its desire of becoming the world's leading power in cotton production. By 1997, it had declined to 10% of its original size splitting into four lakes. By 2009, the southeastern lake had disappeared and the southwestern lake had retreated to a thin strip. In August 2014, satellite images by NASA revealed that for the first time in modern history the eastern basin of the Aral Sea had completely dried up. The eastern basin is now called the Aralkum Desert. Carla Sospedra Salvadó was the camera operator and editor of Isabel's documentary. ** Music by Jordi Rovira from the album "müsicærrönea" (Secta Records)
