A student seeking isolation decides that an abandoned old house will be the ideal place for him to study for his examinations. The locals' "strange prejudices" and aversion to the place suit him perfectly, and he confidently feels that there won't be anything more troubling than rats to bother him... Abraham "Bram" Stoker (1847–1912) was an Irish author, who created one of the most iconic characters in fiction, Dracula (1897). He had a lifelong interest in the theatre, and began his writing career as a critic for the Dublin Evening Mail (part-owned by the famous Irish ghost story writer Sheridan Le Fanu) in the 1870s. From 1879 he worked as assistant and secretary to the great actor-manager Sir Henry Irving, at the Lyceum Theatre in London. Aside from Dracula, he published several novels and shorter fiction between 1890 and his death in 1912. The Judge's House was first published in the 1891 Christmas issue of the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News. It later appeared as part of a collection of Stoker's short fiction published by his widow in 1914, and has been regularly anthologised since. Recording © Bitesized Audio 2020.
