As we mark the 50th anniversary of Eyewitness News, here’s a remarkable piece of history from our archives. It was May 17, 1974. As many Southern Californians were getting ready to sit down for dinner, an unbelievable shootout was playing out in the middle of a neighborhood in South Los Angeles. LAPD officers fired off more ammunition than they’d ever used before as they fought against the leaders of a self-styled radical group known as the Symbionese Liberation Army. The SLA had kidnapped heiress Patricia Hearst three months earlier and her whereabouts were unknown. Eyewitness News Reporter Christine Lund was among the reporters covering the shootout – bravely knocking on the door of one of the suspects, despite the incredible danger, as bullets whizzed past her. Other journalists, like Eyewitness News reporter Bob Banfield, tried to calm frightened bystanders who were caught in the crossfire. This is the remarkable report that aired that night, documenting the gun battle aftermath in what’s been called the most spectacular shootout in LAPD history.
