I am pleased to share with you one of the many faces of Irek Mukhamedov, one of the greatest dancer's in the world. The notorious first Czar of Russia has been resurrected many times in very different shapes and forms, from literature to art, music and film, and in the worst cases he appears in ourselves when we show cruelty to our fellow human beings. I include Irek’s 1990 Bolshoi performance of the ballet among the finest and most passionate interpretations. Some of history’s many great interpreters of the enigma include in recent years Pyotor Mamonov in the 2009 film Tsar, and veteran actor Nikolai Cherkasov from Eisenstein 1944 masterpiece series Ivan the Terrible. The latter led to the creation of this ballet. The music you are about to hear was composed by Maestro Sergei Prokofiev originally as the film score. In 1973 composer and artistic director of the Bolshoi theater Mikhail Chulaki would take the film score and combine Yury Grigorovich’s unforgettable choreography to bring to life an exciting new ballet. Ivan made its world premiere in 1975. Multiple works of art have been derived from Prokofiev’s score. Conductor Abram Stasevich arranged the score into an oratorio in 1961, and in 1990 Christopher Palmer would stage a concert. Celebrated stage actor, theater owner and symbolist thinker Vsevolod Meyerhold should also be mentioned as one of history’s great Ivan’s. He was known for his performance as the title character in Aleksey Tolstoy’s play the Death of Ivan the Terrible. Meyerhold was an alternative to Stanislavski and Eisenstein often cast actors who studied his teachings. You may want to read about a little of his life here. While one notable Ivan of this era Cherkasov would become one of the greatest and most acclaimed legends in cinema, and favorite actor of Joseph Stalin, Meyerhold, the other Ivan would suffer persecution by the same leader. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vsevolod... Eisenstein and Prokofiev’s lives, particularly the difficulties in making Ivan the Terrible are a testimony to the power of art and human spirit, it conquers war, famine and political tension. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergei_E... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergei_P...
