My tribute to World Air Race pilot and Australia's own 'Top Gun' Matt Hall. Matt is a former Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Fighter Combat (Top Gun) Instructor and fighter pilot who has lived and breathed aircraft all his life. In 2009 he became the first Australian to break into the Red Bull Air Race series, scoring the highest overall placing of any rookie. As a RAAF fighter pilot, Hall logged over 1500 F/A-18 Hornet hours. He was an elite Fighter Combat (Top Gun) Instructor, and in 2006 completed a tour as the chief instructor for this demanding course. Matt spent three years in the United States of America on a USAF exchange programme, flying over 500 hours in the F-15E Strike Eagle, including combat. Matt has received many awards during his military career, including Dux of Pilot, F/A-18 Hornet and Fighter Combat Instructor courses, the 1997 Fighter Pilot of the Year, and he was awarded a Chief of Air Force commendation for his performance as the Chief Instructor of the 2006 Fighter Combat Instructor course. The list of aircraft Matt has flown is an impressive one, including gliders, ultralights, hang gliders, standard Cessna and Piper light aircraft, Citabria, Decathlon, Pawnee, Pitts, RV-4, RV-6, RV-8, Thorp T-18, Acro-Sport, Giles 200 and 202, Extra 200 and 300, MX2, MXS, Cub and Aeroncas, Mustang, Wirraway, Winjeel, T-6 and Corsair warbirds and military types such as the F-111, F-15 Eagle, F/A-18 Hornet, F-16, A-4 Skyhawk and BAE Hawk.
