Auf, auf zum Kampf was a soldier's song popular in the First World War. It was a paraphrase of the song "Frisch auf, frisch auf zum Kampf", which originally honoured the former military leader Albert of Saxony, who was successful in the Franco-German War of 1870/71, with the refrain "Frisch auf! Fresh up, we were born to fight, we extend our hand to King Albert." It was therefore written at the earliest after Albert's coronation at the end of 1873 – author unknown. It already contained the three sentimental verses of the mother, the "man like an oak" and the girl. In various later versions of the song, further verses were sometimes added, and the tribute to King Albert was omitted or replaced by a tribute to Kaiser Wilhelm. [1] The text in its present form was probably rewritten in 1919 as the battle song of the workers' movement. Around 1930, it was rewritten for the SA by NSDAP member Adolf Wagner.
