How do you control problematic odour in your indoor garden? Think of it as the same way as your typical Brita filter uses to filter out water impurities from your tap water. Carbon filters pull the contaminated air through a bed of carbon. Carbon has the ability to trap odours and other volatile organic compounds due to its porous consistency. Typical charcoal has pores of approximately 6-20 microns in size, whereas the typical odour molecule is upwards towards 20 microns in size. The pores act as prisons to the odours, which become trapped within the airspace inside the carbon. The most crucial part of finding the best carbon filter is knowing the size of the fan to the filter. The filter is measured with a CFM rating, showing how much air can be pulled through that carbon in order to function adequately as an odour eliminator. If the fan is too big and the pores are too large, the air will not filter well. If the fan is too small and the pores are too small, then the filter will have trouble pulling air through. You need to find the perfect balance between the size of the fan versus how condensed the carbon is within the filter.
