Potsdam was located in East Germany during the Cold War period. It's just southwest of Berlin and was part of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The city played a significant role in Cold War history, e.g. the Glienicke Bridge, famously dubbed in the Hollywood 2015 historical drama film “Bridge of Spies”, which connected Potsdam to West Berlin and was used for exchanging captured spies between the East and West Germany. The original 17 palaces are spread across three parks in Potsdam and its city centre. They offer a huge ensemble of palaces shaping one the largest UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany. Sanssouci Palace was built by Prussian King Frederick the Great as his summer palace, it is often counted among the German rivals of Versailles. While Sanssouci is in the more intimate Rococo style and is far smaller than its French Baroque counterpart, it is also notable for the numerous temples and follies in the surrounding park. The palace's name is a French phrase (sans souci) meaning "without worries".
